There can be no denying the damaging influence that media  has had upon wider perceptions of young people, and we live in a society in which many are afraid, anxious, and critical of the youth of today.

The impact of these widely held perceptions upon young people has not gone un-noticed and the Bristol branch of The Prince’s Trust has been the base for a local effort forming part of a new national initiative funded by the Co-operative Group.  According to Michael Fairclough, Head of Community and Campaigns at The Co-op;

“Truth about Youth is about helping young people deal with the challenges of growing up in a culture that has widespread negative perceptions of youth. We hope that by working with The Prince’s Trust and supporting projects which enable young people to work with adults, the media and the wider community, we will be able to make a real difference.”

The scheme is co-ordinated by two Prince’s Trust executives alongside a group of dedicated volunteers. Their work includes arranging free, three week long “experience” courses in partnership with professional organisations, that are aimed at giving young people an insight in to media production skills.
